Recorder Web site to offer up-to-the-minute Baptist State Convention coverage

By Steve DeVane
Managing editor

Thanks to state-of-the-art technological advances, the Biblical Recorder will bring news from this year's Baptist State Convention (BSC) to some of its readers faster than ever.

Biblical Recorder Editor R.G. Puckett said news from the convention Nov. 10-12 will be posted on the Recorder's Web site. People wanting the latest news on the annual meeting should log on to www.biblicalrecorder.org and click on the news and features section.

A special section on the site has been set aside for convention news. The section now contains interviews with all six candidates for BSC offices, the convention program and other stories about the meeting.

"Not only will the online version of the Recorder have comprehensive coverage of the convention, but it will also get it to our readers quicker than ever before," Puckett said. "The Biblical Recorder Web site will be the best and first source of convention news."

Messengers to this year's convention will vote on a number of issues considered crucial to N.C. Baptists.

Messengers will elect Convention officers on Nov. 11.

The election of president is scheduled for 10:20 a.m.

Mac Brunson, pastor of Green Street Church in High Point, and Jack Causey, pastor of Statesville's First Church, are seeking the BSC presidency. Brunson is considered the conservative candidate, while Causey is more closely aligned with moderates.

Convention officials say the results of the presidential election will probably be announced before the morning session adjourns at noon or when the afternoon session begins at 2 p.m.

The election of the first and second vice presidents is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. Charlotte Cook, a member of Jersey Church in Linwood and a moderate, and Mike Cummings, director of missions in Burnt Swamp Association and a conservative, are running for first vice president.

Allan Blume, pastor of Mt. Vernon Church in Boone and a conservative, and David Crocker, pastor of Snyder Memorial Church in Fayetteville and a moderate, are seeking the second vice president's post.

The results of the vice presidential races will likely be announced before the afternoon session ends at 4:20 p.m. or when the evening session begins at 7 p.m., Convention officials said.

Messengers will vote on an executive director-treasurer to replace Roy J. Smith at 8:05 p.m. on Nov. 11. The BSC General Board will recommend that James H. Royston be elected to the post.

Royston, a native of Johnson City, Tenn., is currently pastor of Colonial Heights Church in Kingsport, Tenn. He previously served for about 16 years in North Carolina.

Royston has received unanimous approval from the General Board and an Executive Director Search Committee chaired by Marion Lark, pastor of Henderson's First Church. Other major decisions by messengers to the convention include:

  • A constitutional change in the relationship between the BSC and Meredith College.
  • A constitutional change in the relationship between the BSC and Baptist Hospital.
  • The 1998 budget.
