By Wally Poor Three young women from North Carolina were part of a 14-member volunteer team which led Vacation Bible School and evangelistic services in Belize City, Belize recently. Jennifer Hoosier of Thomasville, Elizabeth Hoyle of Shelby and Amber Nelson of Boiling Springs were part of the group which held Vacation Bible School and evangelistic services at the Faber's Road Church of Belize City. Hoosier is a member of Southside Church of Thomasville. Hoyle is a member of Christ Covenant Church in Shelby. Nelson is a member of Mud Creek Church in Hendersonville. The North Carolina women, all students or graduates of Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, joined 11 other Southern Baptists from South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Missouri and Puerto Rico in the week-long project. During the Bible school 53 children made decisions to accept Christ as their Savior and 12 other decisions were registered in the evening services. The volunteers worked with Ken and Cathy Moore, International Service Corps workers in Belize. The Central American country of Belize is the former British Honduras. It became an independent nation in 1981. Cathy Moore had high praise for the volunteers. "God blessed us with a super bunch of people," she said. "We were truly blessed with this team." Many of the team members did not know each other before the trip. "They got along like they'd known each other all their lives," Cathy Moore said. The trip to Belize was the first foreign mission trip for Elizabeth Hoyle, who graduated from Gardner-Webb this year. She has participated in mission trips in the United States. "To see children here that are 100 percent turned on to Jesus is one of the biggest blessings I have experienced next to my own salvation," she said. The trip was also the first overseas mission project for Jennifer Hoosier. "God has humbled me so much while in Belize. By looking upon each child, I was able to see the face of God," she said. "It was and is truly a moving experience." Amber Nelson said she enjoyed working with the Moores and Pastor Kenrick Logan of the Faber's Road church. "I could really see God working in Faber's Road and I think they'll have an effective ministry in Belize," she said. (EDITOR'S NOTE -- Poor is a correspondent with the International Mission Board.)
